Mexico: Country and Program Overview

Mexico is a Spanish-speaking country about three times the size of Texas, consisting of 31 states and one federal district. The capital is Mexico City. Mexico has a rapidly developing economy, ranked by the World Bank as the twelfth largest in the world. The climate ranges from tropical to desert, and the terrain consists of coastal lowlands, central high plateaus, and mountains of up to 18,000 feet.

Children Available

Mostly infants (of both genders) starting from 4 months are available for adoption from Mexico.

Parent Requirements

Adoptive applicants may be married couples or single women. The younger parent must not have an age difference of more than 50 years with the adopted child. Prospective parents must be 25 years of age or older and at least 17 years older than the adopted child. Adoption is open to couples and single women with no criminal history in the U.S. or Mexico. Parents must be in good health and provide proof of health insurability of the child.

Travel

Two to three trips to Mexico are required by adoptive parents. The first trip is 6- 8 weeks in duration. The second trip is 2- 4 weeks duration.

Timelines

2 weeks to 2 months is the approximate waiting time to be matched with. Once the dossier is submitted in Mexican courts, it may take 6 – 8 months to complete the adoption process.

Fees

Approximate total cost for an adoption from Mexico is $20,000-$25,000. These fees include the home study, travel, stay in country, agency fees, foreign program costs and legalization of paperwork.
